Simon Dyson plotting Spanish high on return

IN a week when his oldest professional friend Luke Donald returned to the world number one spot, York-born Simon Dyson will be trying to elevate his own standing in the golf numbers game this week.

Dyson returns to European Tour action after a week’s absence for the Spanish Open, which starts at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla circuit on Thursday.

While buoyed by regaining his 36th place in the world rankings after his latest week’s absence, the Malton & Norton Golf Club star will now hope to put a run of tournament appearances together in a stop-start opening to the season.

Of the 16 tournaments so far played on the Tour since January, Dyson has managed to appear in only eight.

That has left him trailing in 36th place in the Race To Dubai as well as dipping in the points placings for qualification for this year’s European Ryder Cup team. Presently he is 16th in the world points list and five places further back in the Euro table.
