Lake placid as Simon Dyson beats cut in China Open

TRICKY waters were calmly negotiated by York’s Simon Dyson in the Volvo China Open at the Binhai Lake Golf Club, writes Tony Kelly.

The world-rated number 38 improved his standing from an up and down opening round when he posted a two-under-par 70 yesterday to lift him more than 20 places up the leaderboard going into today’s third round.

Dyson shrugged off his first day habit of matching birdie for bogey when he returned more to his consistent self in the second round.

Mirroring his first round, he found the second hole to his liking, again birdying the par-five.

Again, as in the first round, though, he dropped a shot on the par-four ninth, but that proved his only setback.

His inward nine was all pars save for a sparkling brace of birdies on the 12th and 15th holes to nudge him to a far more impressive two-under for the day and three-under at halfway, easily beating the cut by two clear shots.

Going into today’s third round in the Tianjin province, the lead was held jointly by England’s Gary Boyd, and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet of France on 11-under-par – a shot ahead of nearest challenger, South Africa’s Branden Grace.
