AS South African Louis Oosthuizen cruised to The Open Championship, York’s Simon Dyson was left lamenting his putting at St Andrews.
Oosthuizen led from halfway to lift the famous Claret Jug at 16-under par, beating Lee Westwood by seven shots.
Dyson, meanwhile, carded a level par final round to finish in a tie for 48th place at one-over par for the tournament. That failed to match his best-ever finish in The Open – 34th place at St Andrews in 2005.
The 32-year-old said: “It’s been a good week. I’ve hit it lovely for all four days, but I’ve not holed any putts.
“I hope I can keep on playing like I am, but with a few putts dropping. I’m pleased with my game.”
Dyson started his final round in explosive fashion with a birdie three at the first, but dropped a shot at the fourth. Thereafter he was a model of consistency, carding 14 consecutive pars.
After opening rounds of 69 and 75, Dyson shot a one-over par 73 on Saturday.
He dropped a shot at the par-four fourth, but completed the front nine in level par after a birdie three at the ninth.
He dropped shots on the 15th and 16th – bogeying the latter for the third consecutive day – but restored order with a three at the last.
