POURING rain left Seon Scott in two minds about whether to turn out for Forest Park Golf Club’s October medal - but the 60-year-old was glad he donned the waterproofs.

Scott went out and shot a gross 68, or three-under-par, to fire the lowest round ever recorded by an amateur member at the Stockton-on-the-Forest course.

Scott’s efforts saw him record a nett 62 in the end-of-season competition on the 6,673-yard Old Foss Course and meant his handicap was chopped from six to 4.6.

But as the 20 year veteran member, and former club captain, admitted, he nearly didn’t get off the first tee. “When I turned up it was raining and the forecast was pretty bad,” he said.

“A lot of guys turned up and decided to turn round and go home. I was umming and ahhing and I start to tease a few of the guys. You have to show you can play in all sorts of weather conditions. After that, I had to go out.”

Scott scored a spectacular 33 on the outward nine thanks to birdies at the fifth, seventh and eighth holes. He dropped a shot on the tenth but remedied that with a birdie on the 12th.

A cracking putt for a two brought another shot on the par-three 14th but Scott admitted to feeling the enormity of what he could accomplish when he three-putted the 15th.

A four iron that nearly went in for a hole in one at the next relaxed him and he steered a course through the rest of the back nine for the round of a lifetime.

Scott added: “The first half of the year I was really struggling with my game but, recently, I have started feling a bit better. I have changed my swing a little bit and it is going well.”
