TEENAGER George Atkinson has completed an historic slice of senior service at Pike Hills Golf Club.

The Archbishop Holgate's Sixth-Form pupil, who plays off a handicap of 11, scooped the Lott Trophy and the Lycett Green Bowl.

It is understood that not only is Atkinson the youngest player to win these competitions, he is also the youngest to seize both in the same year.

The Lott Trophy is for the best nett score over two rounds on championship day with Atkinson firing a gross 79 (nett 67) in each round.

Meanwhile, the Lycett silverware rewards the winner of the club match-play singles knockout tournament.

Atkinson came back in the final from being three shots down in the opening five holes to beat opponent Steven Toase 3 and 1.

His conquest also, bizarrely, saw Atkinson get back into contention in the final, the semi-final and the previous round to that by birdying the par-four 17th hole on each occasion.

Said the Osbaldwick-based teenager's dad Glenn, who is also a member at Pike Hills: "That 17th hole is now his lucky hole, but, that apart, it's a big boost for him to win two senior competitions as a junior.

"He's certainly done better than me. I have never won any of them."

Dual-winner Atkinson hails from an avid golf dynasty.

Besides his dad, who plays off 13 and has been a member of Pike Hills for 22 years, and his younger brother Alfie, who also plays golf though whose interest is keener on football - he is on York City's academy books - both George's grandparents, Paul and Hazel Reed, are honorary life members at Pike Hills.

Indeed, his grandfather is currently the oldest playing member at the age of 75 at the club, where he has previously served as former competitions secretary and also for the York Union of Golf Clubs.

Now grandson, who works each Saturday in the pro shop at pike Hills, has boldly followed in grandfather's swing with Atkinson senior twice a winner of the Lott Trophy in 1984 and 1986.

The 19-handicapper notched her ace on the 114-yard, par-three fourth hole at Scarthingwell GC to bag the watch and membership of the exclusive Boss Watches H1 Club.
