THE tag of invincible has been claimed by the relentless York Union of Golf Clubs’ Inter District Union team.

Already winners of the league championship, the York ranks completed a clean sweep of triumphs in each of their summer outings this summer when they beat hosts Teesside 22-14 at Billingham.

Martin Brown (Pike Hills) and James Walker (The Oaks) led the team out in the morning foursomes and duly recorded victory.

Fulford GC duo Damon Coulson and Rob Moore also triumphed followed b y a halved match from the Pike Hills pairing of Craig Smith and Oliver Adamson.

But Teesside also made inroads and with the early exchanges tied at 5-5, it was left to the axis of Adrian Lount ( Pike Hills) and Josh Plaxton (Fulford) to win on the final hole for a narrow-point lead to York after the foursomes.

The closeness of the encounter continued into the singles, where the first four ties all went to the 18th - with two wins and two halves for York.

A 2 and 1 win for the Teesside pair in the fifth game broke the sequence, and hinted at a home comeback.

The next two matches were also not finalised again until the final hole with each side picking up another two points.

Fulford’s Chris Lone posted the biggest win of the afternoon for York with a 4 & 3 success at the 15th putting York on 17 points and close to victory.

Fittingly, it was team captain Russ Chilton, playing for the first time this season, who added the match-clinching points with yet another win on the 18th. Plaxton had to retire injured, gifting Teesside a walk over, but Adamson with a half, and Lount with a 3 & 2 win, closed the match out, and confirmed York’s place at the top of the League with maximum points from seven matches.

The emphatic feat was last done two years ago by York’s major rivals, Sheffield.

The untouchable victors now turn their focus to the IDU Team Championship at Cookridge Hall next weekend when they will attempt to add the six-man team trophy to their league crown.
