TEENAGER David Hague is on top of the North Yorkshire golfing world after streaking to victory in the final of the York Union of Golf Clubs' Matchplay Championship.

The 18-year-old saw off Fulford's James Cass 5 & 3 in the final to complete a remarkable few weeks which have also seen him claim the Union's junior crown, the club championship at Malton & Norton and a Yorkshire Order of Merit event at Sand Moor.

Hague, who took up golf when he was 11, had earlier beaten Kirkbymoorside's Gary Thorner in the competition before stunning defending champion Adrian Lount (Pike Hills) in the last four.

The tournament took place over two days, starting at Aldwark Manor on Saturday and reaching a conclusion at Scarthingwell the following day.

It was consistent accuracy from tee to green, and the ability to get up and down when necessary, that saw Hague take the title. Three down at the turn, Cass birdied the 12th to give himself a chance of revival.

It was not to last. Hague holed out from the edge of the green for a birdie on 13 and he closed out the match on the 15th.

Hague said: "I am thrilled to bits. There are some great names on the trophy and I am very pleased to now be one of those. I had a good game with Gary. I won two up but he was winning on the 15th and I managed to get it back.

"I started off very well against Adrian. I was four under through eight holes and I was six up at the turn. There was no coming back from that and to win 5 & 3 was quite convincing.

"I play for York with James. We are foursomes partners and neither of us really wanted to beat the other person. We are such good friends. It was a quiet front nine but I birdied two of the last six holes."

Richard Jagger, secretary of Malton & Norton, where Hague won the club championship this year with a pair of 68s, said: "David plays off plus one now and he has had a really great year. He is only going to get better."

Next up for Hague is the North of England Amateur Championship at Pannal on September 30.
