DAVID Shackleton enjoyed a clean sweep at the two-stage Clifton Cycling Club/Cycle Heaven Annual Road Race.

Shackleton, of Cottingham Coureurs, won the morning prologue over a 5km course from the foot of Terrington Bank, finishing at the entry to Sheriff Hutton, clocking five minutes and 38 seconds.

Only six other finishers in a field of 60 managed to break six minutes.

Shackleton also won the afternoon road race over five laps of the hilly Bulmer/Ganthorpe circuit, covering an overall distance of 54 miles.

By the start of the second lap, a break of four riders had pulled clear, but a lap later this had been whittled down to two riders – Callum Sewell and Glyn Watkins.

They fought hard to maintain a gap until the final lap, when the bunch upped the pace.

The increase in speed saw a number of riders dropped from the peloton and two new leaders pull clear, with Shackleton taking the sprint finish from Cleveland Wheelers’ Rob Carter.

Sewell held on for fourth, with James Thompson taking third.

The top three road race finishers also took the top three overall placings once the morning’s prologue times were added in.
