A “COME and try it” time trial attracted about 30 newcomers to Clifton Cycling Club.

The event was run on a quiet and safe circuit of 4.8 miles around Appleton Roebuck, near York, and aimed to give cyclists a chance to experience the thrill of racing for the first time.

Organiser Nick Scull said: “We first ran this event three years ago to celebrate the Tour de France’s start in London.

“Since then we’ve seen massive British success in the Olympic cycling disciplines, and stage wins by Britain’s Mark Cavendish in major European races. Cycle sport is becoming headline news.

“A fun event like this just shows another side to cycling – a sport that’s accessible to all.”

Cycle Heaven donated prizes for the winners and the best male was Guy Eley, who was timed at 12 minutes 39 seconds. Fastest woman Nollaig Heffernan was less than a minute behind, while the top junior was 13-year-old Conall Berg, who clocked 13-51.
