CYCLISTS from all over the country will be converging on the region next weekend to take part in the annual Ryedale Grand Prix.

The Grand Prix, to be held at Ampleforth Abbey on Sunday, July 28, is the latest in a series of major cycling events in the lead up to next year’s Tour de France Grand Depart.

The 93-mile men’s race will start at 1.15pm and will include the Peter Longbottom Memorial, in tribute to the former Olympian from Malton.

“The Ryedale Grand Prix is strategically important to British Cycling,” said event organiser Bob Howden. “Ryedale offers some of the country’s best cycling roads and trails.”

The event is organised by British Cycling’s Yorkshire region and sponsored by Grass Concrete Limited and Ryedale District Council.

In conjunction with the Grand Prix, a Howardian Heritage Ride is being held on Saturday, July 27, taking in a 34-mile loop.
