Bowls: Coast foes cut down at pinnacle

York Indoor Bowls Club went to the top of the Hebden Trophy league after they beat Scarborough to collect a healthy 16 points.

The away side, skippered by Geoff Walker dropped a single on the first end then only lost four more before the 20th as they took control to lead 28-8 en route to a comfortable 28-11 triumph.

Tony Bryan’s team also had an excellent afternoon.

They countered from 7-0 down with three ends gone to control the game, which they effectively had won by the 15th end after surging to a 23-13 advantage. They finished 27-19 winners.

At home, Tony Hopcutt’s side recovered from 13-11 down after 14 ends to win 23-15.

Ken Robinson’s side found it tough going as they were made to pay for a slow start.

They were 18-3 in arrears after 11 ends and though they came back well, they were ultimately beaten 23-16.

New Earswick IBC moved up a place to fourth with a 12-point haul after an encouraging 86-68 victory over second from bottom Hornsea.

At home, both rinks led from start to finish.

Mick Head’s team won 15 ends to take their game 30-7, while Bob Howland’s rink maximised a good start, which saw them leading 10-1 after five ends, to wrap up a 25-13 triumph.

Over in Hornsea, Neil Bushby’s side were level at 9-9 with seven ends to play, but lost 23-14.

Brian Birch’s team – only 11-9 behind after 12 ends – failed to rally and were defeated 28-17.
