NEW Earswick Indoor Bowls Club picked up the honours from the first derby of the season.

They beat York 84-68 in the North Eastern League thanks to two winning rinks and picking up six points to York’s four.

New Earswick took control early in the game with the aggregate scores, leading 28-20 after five ends, then 48-31 after ten.

York countered over the next five ends to lead 62-51 but then New Earswick pulled away again to finish 84-68 victors.

At Huntington Road, Monika Morgan’s side got off to a good start, leading 9-0 after only three ends then 15-3 after eight.

Barbara Dawson’s team got into the game but the damage had already been done and the game finished 27-13.

The other rink saw a close exchange which initially looked unlikely when Pat Walker’s side led 11-4 after six ends.

But Brenda Martin’s team slowly clawed away at the arrears and, with five ends to play, the score stood at 14-11 in Walker’s favour.

Martin’s team won four of the remaining ends, crucially scoring a single on the last to take the tie 16-15.

At Thanet Road, Maureen Robinson’s team had the upper hand when they led 14-10 after 13 ends. However, a dropped four, then two ends later, a dropped six left them chasing Moyra Headley’s team to no avail as the visitors went on to win 26-17.

Pauline Cooper’s team faced a similar fate as they let a 14-9 lead slip to Margaret Morgan’s team, dropping six shots over four ends to trail 15-14.

But the home side responded with a five, two and then a single to go into the last end leading 22-15.

York made a great start to their Mason Trophy campaign, triumphant at home and away to seal a 44-34 aggregate victory over Hornsea.

At home, the game swung to and fro. Skipping the hosts, Sheila Turpin led 5-0 after four ends but then trailed 10-6 after 13 only to take the lead again within three ends to lead 11-10.

Two’s from three of the following four ends gave the visitors a one-shot lead before the last end. A two afforded a resilient home side a narrow 17-16 victory.

Away, Pat Potter’s side trailed 8-7 only to bounce back, winning nine of the next 11 ends en route to a 27-18 success.

York now play Harrogate in the next round.

New Earswick start their Yorkshire Over-55s League division one campaign against Redcar today at 12.30pm, while York ‘B’ complete their opening second division fixture against Scarborough tomorrow at noon.
