Dringhouses came from behind to narrowly edge out rivals Wigginton in a tense Tockwith Bowls League Cup final that went down to the wire.

Playing the tie at Dunnington Bowling Club, it was Wigginton who began by far the better, going seven shots up after six ends and increasing their lead to 14 shots after 12.

But from this point Dringhouses fought their way back, trimming the deficit to a mere two shots after completing 17 ends.

Mal Thompson’s rink of Margaret Sadler, Stan Face and Alan Yoward finished first, scoring two to level the match for Dringhouses.

Geoff Symon’s rink of Dave Slawson, Margaret Cooper and George Elliot were the next rink to finish, scoring one to put Dringhouses in front for the first time.

This meant that Ray Calpin’s rink of Joyce Botting, Barry Turner and Ray Lyall needed to score at least one.

With his last wood, Calpin took the jack into the ditch leaving a tight measure between his toucher in the ditch and Wigginton’s nearest wood on the green.

An independent umpire was called in, the shot being given to Dringhouses by the closest of margins and giving them victory by two shots.
