NEW Earswick Indoor Bowls Club brought the curtain down on the season with its League play-off finals.

Gordon Storey’s team flew out of the blocks against Ray Bowman’s team to lead 11-0 after only two ends, eventually winning the men’s pairs league 28-9.

Both winners of their respective leagues battled it out in the ladies pairs final, with Val Fort’s team taking an early 6-2 lead, but Pat Walker’s team nudged ahead to win 17-13.

The Australian pairs saw Dave Sykes’ team leading Graham Lockwood’s league and trophy winners 10-8 after 13 ends. Lockwood scored a five on the next end but Sykes countered to level before Lockwood won the last four ends to triumph 19-14.

In the vets mixed triples, Vic Thompson’s league and trophy winners led Carol Williams’ team 14-7 after 11 ends. But Williams took all of the last seven to triumph 20-14.

Greenhills took their 11th consecutive Any Triples league title but came unstuck in the play-off finals losing 15-1 to Eboracum.

League and trophy winners Maureen Wood’s team took on runners-up Diane Hardy’s team in the ladies triples play-off. Despite a rally, Wood’s team made the most of an 11-0 lead after five ends to prevail 18-14.

It was a case of déjà vu in the men’s triples play-off which saw Graham Lockwood’s team take an early 11-0 lead. Despite a five on the sixth end, Rob Dunnill’s team couldn’t quite get back, losing 20-16.

In the vets men’s fours, Barry Harrison’s league runners-up team saw off the challenge of John Baxter’s team 25-8.

The ladies fours saw league runners-up Pat Storey’s team take on Moira Ellis’ league champions. Storey’s team edged home 19-17.

Gate double

HOLGATE got off to a fine start in division one of the new York Amateur Bowls Association season, beating Rowntree 8-0 at home, before winning 7-1 at newly promoted Dringhouses.

There were opening day division two wins for RI Corinthians - 7-1 at home Clifton, Shipton - 7-1 at promoted Wigginton, and West Park 6.5-1.5 at Bootham.
