TOM SOMERS topped the six-strong City of York Athletic Club contingent who represented the North England North-East team in the Sainsbury School Games.

The event was the last at Sheffield’s Don Valley stadium before the iconic arena is demolished, and it was given a golden send-off by the impressive Somers.

He won gold in the 200 metres in a stunning 21.17 seconds but the record time was ruled out because of the favourable wind speed.

Then Somers anchored the four by 100m relay team of Dan Walsh, Joe McGrath and Leon Greenwood.

He took the baton trailing his Birmingham opponent by 20 metres, but Somers powered through to pip his rival by a mere 100th of a second as the northern quartet clocked 42.04.

City of York AC team-mate George Davies won a silver in the javelin with a throw of 63.06 metres, while Emily Dutton also won silver in the 4 x 100m girls’ relay.

Rowan Palmour was fourth in the high jump after 1.63 metres with Ben Wharton fifth in the shot put with 13.03 metres. Chelsea Walker was also fifth, clocking 45.11 in the 300m hurdles.

The North England North-East team was managed by Karen Buck, a coach at the CYAC, while another club official, Becky Campsall, was the attaché to the northern team at the Sailsbury Games.
