MICK DOYLE landed an 11lb carp to win the York & District Amalgamation of Anglers’ John Smith’s Hospitals Cup on the River Ouse.

The Leeds angler caught a skimmer and perch on legered worm before switching to a double pinkie approach hoping to land some small fish – only to net the winning carp to take his haul to 13lb 13oz.

York’s Mick Wood was second with 11lb 2oz and Col Hardy, of Bradford, finished third with 9lb 6oz.

Meanwhile, Andy Wallace won the under-70s section of the latest amalgamation veterans’ match with a catch of 8lb. The top over-70s entrant was Keith Scholfield with 12lb 8oz.

Matt Crowl was the winner of Shepherd Angling Club’s match at Rawcliffe Bridge on the Aire and Calder Canal.

Crowl amassed 2lb 6oz of roach in the last half an hour of the match, while Doc Findlay finished second with 2lb of roach and perch.

On a wet and breezy day, bites were hard to come by until the later stages when the fish decided to move in and feed. Up until that point only the odd fish had been caught.

York CIU Angling Section’s match at Fulford has been switched from Sunday to tomorrow.
