A FIELD of 20 anglers will contest the first Rennison Shield at Railway Pond in Dringhouses tomorrow in honour of retiring head bailiff Colin Rennison.

Rennison is stepping down after 22 years in the post, to be replaced by Richard Bevan. The new competition has been introduced as a tribute to the influence Rennison has had at the York venue.

Brian Bevan, one of the pond’s six bailiffs, said: “Colin has been unbelievable. The pond would not be what it is today without him. It’s all voluntary work and he’s done an absolutely fantastic job.”

Fishing in the first Rennison Shield contest will be held from 9am to 2pm.

Meanwhile, Matt Crowl was the winner of the latest Shepherd Angling Club match on the River Ouse below the weir at Acaster.

The fishing for a field of 11 members was excellent on a day of wind and rain.

Crowl had 21lb 14oz of bream, skimmers and roach caught feeder fishing on double red maggot.

Second was John Sturdy with a mixed bag of roach and skimmers, mostly caught on feeder and maggot, for a weight of 19lb 10oz.

Third place went to Mel Graves with 10lb 10oz of bream and skimmers, again caught on feeder, while fourth was Nigel Crowl with 10lb 4oz.

• The timings have been changed for the York & District Amalgamation of Anglers’ veterans’ match at Laybourne Lakes on Wednesday, August 28.

Anglers should meet at 11am for a draw at noon, with fishing from 1pm to 6pm.
