THE Acomb Tackle-sponsored York Winter League is heading towards a thrilling climax.

The last league match will be held on Sunday, March 10 on the Donkey Woods, Palace Ings and Fulford stretches of the River Ouse.

The team prize is between Anglers World, who have nine points, and Leeds Angling Centre, who are on 11 points.

The individual event is a tussle between Tony Stephenson, with 33 points, Stan Haigh, on 26 points, and Tony Layfield, on 23 points.

Leeds Angling Centre angler Layfield was the winner of round five, with a haul of 7lb 9oz, including six skimmers, from his draw at the Bridgefield.

Stephenson, of Anglers World, was second with 4lb 5oz. He took four skimmers from his peg at the Bridgefield.

White Rose’s Steve Snaith, stationed at the bottom of the Palace stretch, was third with a 4lb 4oz haul that included six roach.

Selby’s Paul Issatt took fourth place with a 3lb 8oz net that included five small skimmers.

Fifth went to John Cyrowski, of Barlby Village Stores, with a mixed bag of 3lb 2oz.

Meanwhile, The York & District Amalgamation of Anglers’ Tadcaster Tower Rose Bowl contest will be fished below York on Sunday.

The draw will be made at St Clement’s WMC at 8.30am.
