THERE was a shock result in division two of the Northern Powergrid York and District Table Tennis League, as RI ‘E’s Dave Dunn pulled off a straight games win over RI ‘C’s Tim Smith.

Dunn stepped up from division three to topple Smith, but his win was not enough to prevent RI ‘E’ losing 8-2.

Jonathan Chabry remains undefeated this season, but it needed a doubles success for RI ‘D’ to retain their unbeaten tag in a close tussle with Shepherds ‘C’.

Shepherds had earlier thrashed RI ‘F’ 9-1 thanks to maximum hauls by John Flintoft and John Freeman.

Ady McClaren won his singles as Bootham ‘B’ were held to a draw with Shepherds ‘B’.

Andy Fletcher was the star man as his straight games successes guided Shepherds ‘B’ to a narrow win over Bootham ‘D’, Dave Quinlan beating Nathan Taylor and Dave Simpson for the losers.

Similarly, Ian Williams was too good for the opposition as Shepherds ‘A’ overcame Bootham ‘B’ 6-4.

A fine display from Dave Rawlings saw Bootham ‘C’ seal a tight victory over Shepherds ‘C’.

Aidan Ranftler and John Farmery led Holgate ‘A’ to an 8-2 success over Crescent ‘B’ in division one, with the losers also crashing 9-1 to RI ‘A’, despite winning the doubles.

Ranftler picked up a couple of scalps as Holgate ‘A’ went down 8-2 to a Martin Lowe inspired Coneysthorpe ‘A’.

Anders Hammerback was unable to prevent University ‘A’ losing to Coneysthorpe ‘B’.

Last year’s division three champions, Shepherds ‘D’, elected to remain at the same level this term, and Paul Kozyra and Mick Surtees saw them to an 8-2 win over University ‘B’.

Rob Farmery was in determined mood as he helped Holgate ‘C’ to a draw at BT ‘B’. All his singles wins and a doubles success went to five games.

Kenny Brown’s hard work also paid off as RI ‘H’ fought out a draw with Aviva ‘A’.

Rich Collyer defeated Howard Broadbent 11-9 in the final game as Bootham ‘E’ proved too good for BT ‘A’.

In division four, RI ‘I’ edged out Hartrigg Oaks, while Mick Belton’s win over Pete Corner ensured a 6-4 success for Holgate ‘E’ over Bootham ‘G’.

John Stokes was the key figure as RI ‘I’ overcame Trustmarque 7-3, while only having two players was unable to stop Aviva ‘B’ narrowly beating RI ‘J’, Terry Ruane maintaining his fine form.
