A HAT-TRICK of titles was won by York Railway Institute’s Jane Cohen at the York Closed Table Tennis Championships.

Cohen regained the women’s singles title at the York RI gym in Queen Street, beating newcomer Dirui Hu, of the University of York.

Cohen, who last won the crown in 2009, was too strong for her opponent in an entertaining game and won in straight sets, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4.

Cohen also retained the two titles she had won for the last two years.

She teamed up with club-mate Anne Barnard to take the women’s doubles in straight sets against BT’s Marian Broadbent and York RI’s Chris Bartle.

Cohen and club-mate Nathan Horsley then won the mixed doubles final against Broadbent and Jon Wooldridge, of Bootham CC, by three sets to one.

The men’s singles final saw the seventh successive meeting between York RI’s Richard Moss and Martin Lowe, of Coneysthorpe.

Lowe had a flying start, taking the first four points, but Moss won the first set 11-9. He went on to win the second set 11-8 before Lowe took a close third set 12-10.

Moss dominated the fourth set, winning it 11-5 to take the title for the third time in a row and sixth time in total.

Lowe beat Coneysthorpe team-mate Ashley Hodgson in his semi-final, but only after being edged out by the same player in the veterans’ singles final.

Hodgson won the deciding game 15-13 after being two sets down.

Horsley and Moss won a very close men’s doubles final against holders Hodgson and Lowe, winning the decider 13-11.

Hodgson and Lowe won the veterans’ doubles, defeating RI duo Richard Crowther and Mick Wilcockson in straight sets in the final.

James Atkins, of Shepherds, retained the junior singles title, defeating Jake McCarthy, of York RI, 3-0.

McCarthy, however, won his third cadet singles title in a row, getting the better of Coneysthorpe player Ethan Lowe in the final.

Atkins teamed up with Nathan Taylor, of York RI, to win the junior doubles final against McCarthy and Jamie Cameron, also of York RI.

The Clifford Trophy, awarded for the outstanding performance over the two days, went to RI’s Filip Wojtkowiak for winning the division two singles and the restricted singles, while also defeating division one players in the men’s singles.

The tournament was sponsored by GMB.
