RICHARD Moss edged out rival Martin Lowe to retain his men’s singles title in the York Closed Table Tennis Championships.

Sessions ace Moss and Lowe, of Coneysthorpe, clashed in the final for the sixth successive year and they produced a showpiece of the highest quality at the York RI gym, with Moss winning his fifth crown.

Lowe took the first two sets 11-4 and 11-8, but then Moss found his form to take the next two 11-8 and 11-6 to send the match into a deciding set. Lowe led 5-4 at half way and went 8-6 ahead before Moss took the next three to lead 9-8. Lowe levelled before Moss took the next two points to win 11-9.

Both players had straight-sets wins in their semi-finals, Moss beating Coneysthorpe’s Joel Wright and Lowe beating Jon Wooldridge, of Bootham.

Rebecca George, of Coneysthorpe, is the new women’s champion after she defeated holder Jane Cohen, of York RI, 3-2 in sets in a repeat of last year’s final.

However, Cohen did retain two of the three titles she won last year.

She teamed up with club-mate Anne Barnard to take the women’s doubles in five sets against Rebecca George and Gemma Deeley, of Holgate WMC.

Cohen then partnered Nathan Horsley, of Sessions, to a 3-1 victory in the mixed doubles final against George and Ashley Hodgson, of Coneysthorpe.

Lowe and Hodgson won both the men’s doubles and veterans’ doubles events, defeating Moss and Horsley in the men’s final 3-1 and John Hughes and Mark Blackburn, of York RI, in the veterans’ final in straight sets.

They then played against each other in the veterans’ singles final, with Lowe winning in straight sets.

The main sponsors of the tournament were GMB, while Sainsbury’s provided refreshments over the two days. Sponsors of other events were Wm Sessions of York and friends of the Association.
