Hodgson and Lowe fire rampant Ryedale side to the top


CONEYSTHORPE ‘A’ went to the top of division one of the NEDL York and District Table Tennis League after a 9-1 win at Railway ‘A’, writes John Temple.

Ashley Hodgson did not drop a game, while Martin Lowe won his three singles.

Railway ‘A’ thumped Holgate ‘A’ 9-1, thanks to maximum hauls from Paul Robertson and Richard Crowther.

Two wins by the minimum margin saw Coneysthorpe ‘B’ edge out Bootham ‘A’, with Paul Cresswell unbeaten.

It was a similar story as Holgate ‘B’ narrowly overcame Shepherds ‘A’.

In division two, John Temple was undefeated as Holgate ‘D’ picked up an important win, overcoming BT ‘A’ 8-2.

Gareth Bryning won his singles, two of them very close affairs and, helped by Ady McLaren, saw Bootham ‘B’ to an 8-2 win over Shepherds ‘B’.

In division three, Steve Long and Nigel Baker ensured Shepherds ‘D’ were emphatic 8-2 winners of their inter-club clash with Shepherds ‘E’, while Holgate ‘E’ beat a two man Bootham ‘D’ by the same score.

In division four, Holgate ‘F’ whitewashed a two-man Holgate ‘G’, with Pete Corner winning his singles without dropping a game.

Jan Suchecki was also unbeaten as Bootham ‘E’ dismissed Railway ‘G’ 9-1.

Meanwhile, entries for the York Closed Table Tennis Championships, to be held over the weekend of January 30 and 31, need to be submitted by Monday.

The entry forms are in the handbook and all players are being encouraged to take part and help make the event a success.

The draw for the second round of the Shepherd Trophy is: Holgate ‘B’ v Holgate ‘A’, Hartrigg Oaks v Shepherds ‘D’, Railway ‘B’ v Holgate ‘D’, Bootham ‘C’ v Railway ‘F’, Coneysthorpe ‘A’ v Sessions ‘A’, Railway ‘G’ v Holgate ‘E’, Holgate ‘C’ v Shepherds ‘E’.

The Machell Trophy first round draw is: BT ‘A’ v BT ‘B’, Aviva v Railway ‘A’, NEDL/Bootham v Holgate ‘F’, Railway ‘D’ v Bootham ‘E’, Bootham ‘D’ v Shepherds ‘A’. Shepherds ‘B’, Sessions ‘B’ and Sessions ‘C’ receive byes to the quarter-finals.

All matches are scheduled for the week of February 15.
