DIVISION three side Holgate WMC ‘D’ toppled top flight Bootham ‘A’ to win the York & District Table Tennis Association Shepherds Trophy.

Holgate’s Colin Dickson, Pete Taylor and Steve Wands beat Bootham trio Jimmy Mills, Jo Suchecki and Jon Wooldridge 5.5-2.5 in the final of the Northern Powergrid-sponsored handicap competition at York RI.

Holgate won the first two matches before Bootham pulled one back, only for Holgate to take the next two to lead 4-1. Bootham came back to 4.5-2.5 before Dickson beat Mills to give his team the trophy.

Taylor (2.5) was the top-scorer for Holgate, with Wands winning both of his games. Suchecki won 1.5 for Bootham. The Machell Trophy, for teams knocked out in the first round, was won by Coneysthorpe ‘C’ from division one.

James Rule, Keith Wilkinson and Paul Young were 5-4 winners over division three team BT ‘B’, represented by Terry Botting, Bill Carter and Nigel White.

The lead changed hands five times in a close contest that went to the final game.

Rule starred for Coneysthorpe, winning all three of his games, while Botting and Carter won two each for BT.

John Farmery, York & District Table Tennis Association general secretary, thanked competition organiser David Atkinson.

The trophies were presented by Steve Tindall, of sponsors Northern Powergrid.
