Anders Hammarback and Franco Cheung turned in fine performances as University ‘A’ stormed to their first win of the season in division one of the Northern Powergrid York and District Table Tennis League.

University thrashed Crescent ‘B’ 9-1, although four of the students’ wins went to five games.

Rich Crowther was in fine form as RI ‘A’ edged home against Bootham ‘A’, though Jon Wooldridge did well to beat Paul Robertson, with the winners whitewashing a depleted University ‘A’.

Filip Wojtkowiak of RI ‘B’ proved too good for Holgate ‘A’ in a 6-4 victory.

In division two, Dave Lamb and Andy Kirk of Shepherds ‘A’ inflicted the first defeat of the season on RI ‘D’, who crashed 9-1.

Mark Blackburn led RI ‘E’ to an 8-2 win over Shepherds ‘B’, while newly-promoted RI ‘F’ were whitewashed by a ruthless RI ‘C’.

Bootham ‘C’ enjoyed a narrow win over Bootham ‘D’, but although Mike Robinson starred for Tramways with three singles wins and a doubles success, he was unable to prevent Bootham ‘B’ taking the match.

In division three, Howard Broadbent saw BT ‘A’ to an 8-2 win over BT ‘B’, while Matt Ayres was the top player as Bootham ‘E’ nosed out Bootham ‘F’.

RI ‘H’ overcame Holgate ‘D’ 7-3 thanks to a fine display from Howard Mayne.

Bob Young maintained his unbeaten record for the season as, aided by Graham Hood, Holgate ‘C’ thumped BT ‘A’ and University ‘B’ 8-2, with the students going down by the same score to BT ‘B’, Bill Carter and Marian Broadbent in determined form.

Chris Hutchinson and Mick Surtees helped leaders Shepherds ‘D’ defeat Aviva ‘A’ 8-2.

In division four, Paul Greenwood led Shepherds ‘E’ to a 7-3 win over RI ‘I’, with Pete Waring inspiring Holgate ‘E’ to a 7-3 success at RI ‘J’. Terry Ruane did not drop a game as Aviva ‘B’ beat Trustmarque 8-2.

Hartrigg Oaks whitewashed RI ‘K’, John Gray, Roy Barker and Mike Brooks undefeated.

Richard Ingleby junior picked up his first wins as Bootham ‘G’ edged home against RI ‘J’, despite Chris Megone being unbeaten.
