York City Baths Club swimmer Lesley Killen secured an impressive double of first place finishes at this year’s Yorkshire Open Masters Championships at the Scarborough North Bay pool, writes Rob Ellis.

Killen was among five of York’s representatives to achieve a top-three finish as Scott Brown, Oliver Simpson, Dean King and Matthew Holmes also enjoyed success in the pool.

Simpson achieved three runner-up spots, in the 50 metre breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley, and Brown won the 200m freestyle.

But it was Killen who was York’s best performer, taking first position in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle in the 50 to 54 age group.

Killen, who recorded a winning time of 34.94 seconds in the 50m freestyle final, said: “I compete every year and enjoy the team races most of all, so it was disappointing to be the only female from York City Baths Club this year, but I was happy to win my events.”

Yorkshire Open Masters Championships spokesperson Carolyn Donohue was eager to praise the York team.

She said: “The results are fantastic and really demonstrate the hard work swimmers have put in over the year.

“This was a thoroughly enjoyable event and one of the highlights of the competition calendar, so it is great that YCBC was so well represented.”
