GREAT Britain Olympian Kate Haywood will host a swim clinic at The Mount School in York on Saturday.

Breaststroke specialist Haywood, who was a member of the GB team that finished fourth in the 4x100 metres medley relay at Beijing in 2008, will deliver inspirational advice, answer questions and then join young swimmers in the water.

Haywood became the youngest swimmer to represent England at the Commonwealth Games when she competed in Manchester aged just 15 in 2002.

She won a bronze medal in those championships as a member of the 4x100m medley relay team and has since added four more medals – two silver and two bronze – from the last two Commonwealth Games.

The Grimsby-born Loughborough University student was also named the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2003.

Now 23, she is a strong medal contender for the London Olympics in 2012 and will be taking a break from her training schedule in Australia to visit The Mount.

Haywood’s clinic has been arranged as part of her ambassadorial role for the York-based Splish Splosh Swimming School.

The Mount School first provided Vicky Pettitt, the managing director and owner of Splish Splosh, with the opportunity of establishing her dream business from its swimming pool, where she offered lessons to a handful of students in 2005.

Now, the school offers tuition to more than 1,750 students each week at locations up and down the country with an aim of delivering a programme that focuses on fun, safety and sport.

About Haywood’s visit, Pettitt said: “Having Kate as an ambassador is a joy, as she provides our students with a true role model.

“We are focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle and teaching a child to swim at a young age not only allows for the development of an integral skill but also gives them the option of whether to take it up as a leisure or team pursuit as they grow.”

Ahead of her clinic, Haywood added: “I’m really looking forward to seeing where Splish Splosh Swimming School first started out.

“Hopefully, I will get lots of questions from the swimmers and their parents and provide them with the information that has made me successful in my swimming career over the years and what I am hoping to achieve over the next year and a half heading into 2012.”
