A former Press sports editor marked his 75th birthday by swimming 75 lengths for charity.

Malcolm Huntington did the sponsored swim, totalling 1,874 metres, at the David Lloyd pool in Hull Road, in aid of Heslington Church Organ Fund.

The swim raised about £1,200 towards the £12,000 needed to replace the 150-year-old instrument’s console electronics.

Mr Huntington said: “I am very thankful for the great generosity of so many people in contributing to this cause.

“I must also thank the David Lloyd officials for organising a reserved lane in the pool and then having bacon butties on hand for all the people who came to support.”

Mr Huntington worked at the then Yorkshire Evening Press for 46 years, before retiring in 1995. He now works as a sports freelance, covering York City FC matches.
