Wigginton Squash and Social Club are celebrating £46,000 of Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.

The York club are planning to use the cash to update the heating at their Mill Lane headquarters and install solar panels and a mini gym and warm-up area.

The Inspired Facilities fund is part of a £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that aims to spread the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games across the country.

Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games.

Mark Davies, Wigginton match secretary, said: “We are delighted to secure the first Inspired Facilities grant.

“It will enable us to upgrade the quality of our premises and help us to sustain and develop our squash club for the benefit of the community.

“It is fantastic to have our own Olympic legacy in Wigginton, which will be remembered in the years ahead.”

York Outer MP Julian Sturdy said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be handing over a cheque of £46,400 to Wigginton Squash Club on behalf of Sport England.

“This money will enable the club to further improve its facilities to the benefit of all local residents who play squash.

“I would like to thank Sport England for providing such generous sums of money to sports clubs both here in York Outer and across the country.

“In such difficult economic times, it is reassuring to know that sports organisations like Wigginton Squash Club are rewarded for the good work that they do in local communities.”

Sport England chairman Richard Lewis added: “This investment will create a fantastic sporting legacy for Wigginton.

“This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in the York area. For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”

Wigginton are one of 350 local community sports groups who have been offered a total of £17.4 million in Olympic legacy funding through the Inspired Facilities Fund.
