DAVID Lloyd’s Natalie Cain toppled top seed Louise Cotter to win the York & District Ladies Squash League Open Championship.
Number two seed Cain beat York player Cotter 3-1 (9-7, 9-6, 0-9, 9-5) in a high-quality final at Dunnington Sports Club.
In the semi-finals, Cain edged past third seed Jess Hunter 3-2 (9-6, 8-10, 9-4, 2-9, 9-6), while Cotter was a 3-1 (10-8, 3-9, 9-2, 10-8) winner over Jess Watson, who was seeded four.
In the final of the plate competition, Dunnington’s Claire Pethullis beat David Lloyd player Sarah England 3-0 (9-1, 9-4, 10-8).
Pethullis was given a bye into the final after semi-final opponent Kat Smith withdrew, while England was a 3-2 (9-2, 9-3, 5-9, 2-9, 9-4) victor against Lynn Watson.
A tournament spokeswoman said: “It was a fantastic week with some brilliant squash.
“The final between Louise and Natalie featured some of the best squash we have seen in a long time at York & District.
“The rallies were long and the battle was a hard one. Louise did everything to stay in the match, but Natalie had the edge.”
