Snooker: Magical Malton secure league championship

Malton ‘A’ ensured they won the York Conservative Club’s Carlsberg UK Snooker League championship with a game to spare after beating Acomb ‘A’ 4-3.

Since joining the league they have won it twice and finished second twice.

The teams shared the first four frames, with wins by Darren Pawson and Phil Hart for Malton, and Richard Lillie and Paul Holmes (who beat Simon Weatherill) for Acomb. Andrew Sherry and Lee Taylor sealed Malton’s victory before Adrian Barraclough gained a third for Acomb.

Malton’s win was dramatically affected by the 6-1 thrashing of Heworth ‘A’ by their ‘B’ team. Vic Gamble, Mark Calpin (23 bk), Darren Colledge (31 bk), Keith Watkinson and Brian Birch made it 5-0 before Clive Whyte responded for the ‘A’ teams. Roland Cox completed the rout which pushed Heworth ‘A’ down one place.
