Fulford target Billiards League title

Heworth’s championship hopes suffered a blow as they lost 4-2 to Bootham ‘A’ in the York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield Billiards League.

Gary Rogers continued his unbeaten run with the help of breaks of 41 and 65.

However, Mark Winskill’s early 37 break was immediately countered with a run of 31 by Bootham’s Colin Robinson, who went on to level the match.

Ken Taylor moved Bootham ahead, only for Jason Milner (28 break) to level. Barry Rankin (20 break) decided the match in Bootham’s favour and the aggregate point made it 4-2.

Fulford reduced Heworth’s lead to two points with a 4-2 victory over Acomb.

Acomb’s Paul Holmes won the first game then Tom Wilson, Alan Reed and Tim Lister put Fulford in control.

John Ashwell won Acomb’s second point, but Bob Plant had done enough to ensure Fulford took the aggregate.

Rogers is the only unbeaten player and heads the Cameo Engraving Player of the Year competition with nine wins. He also leads the Cameo Engraving highest break contest with 71.

Meanwhile, leaders Heworth were beaten 4-3 by Bootham in the Slater Cup Snooker Pairs League.

Heworth looked set to extend their winning sequence when D Beattie and S Whitely won the first game on the black and J Sherlock and R Walker made it 2-0.

However, Bootham won the next three frames and, in the final game, D Henderson and B Flewitt once again did enough to ensure Bootham gained the aggregate.

Fulford are only two points behind after defeating bottom club Acomb 5-2. They went 2-0 ahead but victories by S Bowker and B Fletcher and G Rawling and M Bowker levelled. B Appleton and D Stockton restored Fulford’s lead and P Stroughair and M Taylor decided it with a 96-22 win.
