Heworth seeking hat-trick of snooker titles

Heworth opened up a four-point lead as a result of beating bottom club Acomb 6-1 in the York Conservative Clubs’ Slater Cup snooker pairs league as they strive towards a hat-trick of championships.

They went 4-0 up with the help of two black-ball results before Steve Bowker and Barry Fletcher put Acomb in the frame with a one-point victory.

Nick Hodgson and Jamie Faircliffe made it 5-1 with a resounding 71-19 win and Heworth easily gained the aggregate point.

Bootham got back to winning ways after two successive defeats with a 5-2 success over Fulford who are in second place, four points adrift. Bootham are a further two points behind.

Bootham captain Wayne Glaister and Peter Mattinson had a one-point win on the black then they went 2-0 up.

D Stockton and B Appleton replied with a 65-13 win but Bootham then moved 4-1 ahead. Fulford’s N Brennand and M Taylor won the last frame but P Henderson and D Flewitt had done enough to ensure Bootham gained the aggregate for a 5-2 victory.

Heworth scraped home against Acomb in the York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield billiards league to keep their lead position. Gary Rogers (54, 44, 38 unfin) and Jason Milner gave them a good start but John Ashwell and Ken Bowser levelled to put Acomb in with a chance.

Keith Myers had to win by 12 points to win the match but Brian Birch held on to win the game by five to ensure Heworth the aggregate in a 4-2 win.

Second-placed Fulford hammered Bootham ‘B’ 5-1 to be only four points adrift. Alf Appleby (34 bk), inflicted the first defeat on Tom Wilson to level after Wayne Puleston (25 bk unfin) came from behind to steal the first game for Fulford. Alan Reed, Tim Lister (23 bk) and Bob Plant completed the rout.

Gary Rogers (H) is unbeaten with eight wins and continues to lead the Cameo Engraving player of the year competition. Tom Wilson (F) drops to second as a result of his defeat and has seven wins in eight games.

Rogers (H) also leads the Cameo Engraving highest break contest with a 71 bk and Terry Ward (F) is second with a 67 bk.
