Snooker: Malton knocked off top spot by Heworth

Heworth ‘A’ replaced Malton ‘A’, who had a free week, as leaders of the York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League despite suffering a shock 4-3 defeat to Bootham ‘B’.

Chris Dawson and captain Ian Robinson put Bootham 2-0 up, but Kevin Gall, Jason Milner (black ball) and Clive Whyte (28 break, black ball win) moved Heworth ahead.

Neil Wood almost won the match for Heworth as he built a 40 break, but failed on the green and Jeff Brown levelled.

Steve Burdett had a 27 clearance to level the last frame, but Lional Barnes won on the respotted black to decide the match for Bootham.

Heworth ‘B’ moved up one place to third after beating Bootham ‘A’ 5-2 having been 2-0 down.

Chris Dower and Rob Barron won the first two games then Vic Gamble (black ball win), Darren Colledge (41 break), Huw Faircliffe, Andy Ireland, who held off Barry Rankin’s 28 break, and Roland Cox decided the match.

Acomb ‘B’ dropped one place to fourth after losing 5-2 to Fulford ‘A’.

Keith Myers levelled after Tom Wilson (22 break) had opened for Fulford. Fulford’s Mike Walsh (30, 37 breaks), James Lee, Alan Reed and Luke Fleet secured the match before Acomb’s Steve Rodgers won the last frame.

Acomb ‘A’ held onto fifth spot and pushed Fulford ‘B’ down two places to seventh after a 5-2 success. Keith Thornhill, Gary Robinson, Barry Manson and Andy Wade won the match before Arthur Pegden and Andy Warriner (30 break) fought back. Paul Holmes (23 break) made it 5-2.

Gall and Holmes are joint leaders in the Willsden Steel Player of the Year competition, with eight wins in ten matches.

Lee Taylor heads the Pasema Paving Highest Break contest with a 44 break, and Walsh is second with a 43 break.
