Top pair pick up snooker league wins

Fulford and Heworth continued their battle for top spot in the York Conservative Clubs’ Slater Cup Snooker Pairs League with both posting 5-2 wins.

After sharing the first four frames with Bootham, Fulford took command with a 103-33 scoreline from C Simpson and D Dunmore.

Fulford won the last two frames and easily gained the aggregate.

Heworth saw a 2-0 lead over Acomb pegged back, but J Bedford and J Faircliffe moved Heworth ahead with a 19-point win.

P Hodgson and N Lawn secured the points and the aggregate for Heworth and Fulford to be joint leaders on 24 points with exactly the same match records.

Bootham ‘B’ bagged their first win and inflicted the first defeat on the York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield Billiards League defending champions Heworth.

Heworth led 2-0 thanks to Gary Rogers and Mark Winskill, but in a stunning comeback Alf Appleby (+65 handicap) took advantage of misses by Steve Burdett (-10) to win 150-89.

Ian Robinson levelled the match and Tony Lambert recorded a comfortable 150-74 victory over Jason Milner and the aggregate point for the 4-2 triumph.

But Bootham ‘B’s joy was tempered by being held to a 3-3 draw against Bootham ‘A’.

Leading 2-0 through Appleby and Robinson, who tallied a 103-point aggregate advantage, the ‘B’ ranks were then hauled back by Nick Parker and Barry Rankin (21, 29, 29 breaks), who trimmed the aggregate to 64.

Chris Dower’s 150-88 win over Tony Lambert ensured the ‘B’ team gained the aggregate by just two points in the 3-3 share-all.

Fulford maintained the pressure on the leaders by defeating Acomb 5-1.

Wins by Wayne Pulleston, Tom Wilson, Alan Reed and Terry Ward (46, 47 breaks) secured the match before Adrian Barraclough managed a reply for Acomb.

The final meeting of leaders Heworth and Fulford on February 12 could decide the championship.
