Amazing baize record puts Wood on cloud nine

Heworth’S Neil Wood is celebrating a record-equalling ninth York Conservative Clubs’ Scruton Cup, writes Colin Robinson.

Wood came back from 2-1 down to defeat Bootham’s Jeff Brown 3-2 and tie with Ken Taylor’s record number of victories.

Two Bootham teams met in the final of the Ted Plant Pairs Team Snooker KO for only the second time in 20 years.

Matt Dawson and captain Wayne Glaister gave Bootham I a good start and Ken Clifford and Tony Cox made it 2-0 with a 38-point aggregate advantage. Bootham II got back into the match as Jeff Dobbin scored 34 points and, partnered with Steve Cain, won the third frame.

Chris Wasniowski was the dominant player in the last frame as he scored 48 points in partnership with Peter Jackson to win the match 3-1 for Bootham I.

Bootham, who had led the way all season, went down to a shock 6-1 defeat to Heworth in the Slater Cup Snooker Pairs League which resulted in Heworth going top.

Acomb moved level on points with Heworth after a 6-1 win against bottom-placed Fulford.

Meanwhile, Heworth maintained their drive towards the Carlsberg UK Snooker League championship with a 5-2 victory over Acomb ‘B’.

Kevan Gall (31bk), Jason Milner (28), Adam Scaife (21) and Mark Winskill (30) made it 4-0 before Eric Leatt replied for Acomb. Tim Hart (30) made it 5-1 then Andy Stone defeated Clive Whyte.

Malton ‘A’ displaced Fulford ‘A’ to move into second place.

First they beat Heworth ‘B’ as Nick Dyson, Dave Coulthard, Simon Weatherill (36), Craig Mead and Roger Ward won the first five frames.

Malton ‘A’ recorded the same score against Fulford ‘B’. Dyson (33) won the first game only for Ray Thackway and Arthur Pegden to move Fulford ahead. John Dyson, Coulthard, Weatherill (39) and Phil Hart sealed the victory.

Fulford ‘A’ dropped to third after a 4-3 defeat by Heworth ‘B’. Mike Walsh and Justin Morris levelled for Fulford after reserve Steve Whitely and Brian Birch had won for Heworth. Keith Watkinson and Chris Thompson secured the victory.

Heworth made a big stride towards retaining the Faber Shield Billiards League title by beating Bootham ‘B’ 6-1.

Vic Gamble, Gary Rogers (40, 39, 38, 31, 25 breaks), Jason Milner (29) and Steve Burdett secured the match before Tim Fillingham (24) replied. Mark Winskill made it 5-1 and ensured Heworth gained the aggregate point.
