Heworth stay top of York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League


Heworth ‘A’ held on to pole position in the York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League by beating Bootham ‘A’ 5-2 although it could have been 4-3 to Bootham.

Brendan Ledgeway won the first game for Bootham before John Sherlock, Jason Milner (black ball success), Steve Burdett, Clive White (22 unfin) and Neil Wood (45, 20, 22 bks) made it 5-1 for Heworth. Barry Rankin (25 unfin) gained Bootham’s second point.

Heworth ‘B’ joined their ‘A’ team on 17 points with a 5-2 defeat of Malton ‘A’.

Brian Birch, Mark Calpin (24 bk) defeated Simon Weatherill (22 bk) and Darren Colledge (23 bk) to propel Heworth 3-0 up before Malton captain David Coulthard (28, 25 bks) clawed one back. Chris Thompson and Nick Hodgson completed the victory, then Tim Foggin got Malton’s second point with a 39 break.

Acomb ‘A’ moved into third place, their highest position for two years, with a 5-2 victory over Bootham ‘B’.

Mark Harrison and Richard Lillie gave Acomb a head start only for Paul Scorfield and Tony Lambert to level. Andy Wade, Adrian Barraclough and Gary Robinson (20 bk) sealed the win for Acomb.

Acomb ‘B’ eased into fourth despite going down to Fulford ‘B’.

Fulford went ahead through Bob Smith, but Kevan Ventress and John Ashwell replied for Acomb.

Jim Rollinson, Tom Wilson and Arther Pegden then sealed Fulford’s triumph before Steve Rodgers replied.

Bootham recorded a second 6-1 win in the York Conservative Clubs’ Slater Cup Snooker Pairs League when they entertained Heworth to open up a three-point lead at the top.

Acomb sneaked home 4-3 by the aggregate point as a result of a 63-28 frame win by captain K Dalby and P Tinker against Fulford.

Fulford recovered from their 5-2 defeat by Acomb in the York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield Billiards League to beat Bootham ‘A’ by the same score.

Roger Gibson, Tim Lister, Richard Stroughair (20, 21, 36 bks) and Colin Neal put them 4-0 ahead before Nick Parker clawed one back and a walkover by John Darley earned Bootham’s points. Fulford easily gained the aggregate.

Gary Rogers (-115 handicap) made an 87 break but still lost the first frame.

Tony Lambert and Tim Fillingham made it 3-0 before Heworth replied through Steve Burdett (21, 36 bks) and Vic Gamble (31 bk). However, Chris Granger had an easy last-game success which ensured the aggregate and make it a second 5-2 defeat for Heworth.

Fulford gained revenge on Acomb with a 7-0 whitewash, the first since season 2007/8. The winning team was Richard Stroughair (29, 30, 34 bks), Roger Gibson, Jeff Brown, Terry Ward (25, 40 bks), Bob Plant and a walkover by Tom Wilson.

Bootham ‘B’ continued their unbeaten run with a 5-2 defeat of their ‘A’ team. John Woodall levelled after Lionel Barnes had put the ‘B’ team ahead.

Ian Robinson and Alf Appleby increased the lead only for John Darley to reduce the arrears.

Tim Fillingham (21, 23 bks) held on to win the match for the ‘B’ team in a close finish against Barry Rankin which also earned the aggregate.
