CHAMPIONS Malton 'A' opened the new York Conservative Clubs' Carlsberg UK Snooker League campaign with a 6-1 win at Bootham 'B'.

The star man was Lee Taylor with a 58 break, and he could have made more but jumped the white over the black to foul when in a good position.

The other Malton winners were Dominic Spiteri, Roger Ward, Phil Hart, Steve Beal and Simon Weatherill (25 break). Matt Smith was the only success for Bootham.

Heworth 'A', last year's runners-up, also got off to a good start, beating Fulford 'A' 5-2, with Clive Whyte setting an early Pasema Paving highest break target with a well-constructed 68.

Mark Winskill hit a 41 break and just held on against Sam England with a black ball pot.

Other wins for Heworth came from Gary Douglas, Adam Scaife and Jordan Worobec, with Jamie Husband and Sam Wass for Fulford.

Fulford 'B' defeated Heworth 'B' 4-3 with wins from Bob Smith, Jim Rollinson, John Adcock and Andy Hurley, with replies from Ian Strickland, Carl De Pasquale and C Richardson.

The biggest shock came at Acomb, where the 'B' team defeated the 'A' team 5-2.

The 'B' were 5-0 up before Keith Thornhill and Mick Borg saved any further embarrassment.

The Acomb 'B' winners were Kevin Ventress, Jeff Winter, B Henry, N Goodacre (black ball) and Chris Nicholson.
