New event unveiled for York's martial arts scene

A NEW power combination and a new event have been unveiled on York’s alive and kicking martial arts scene.

For the past two years cage-fighting in York has been developed and nurtured by Gaz Watkinson, owner of the Multi Masters Academy in Layerthorpe and Tony Dias, who runs the United Martial Arts College in Norton, under United Masters Promotions.

Now the duo have teamed as a full-out partnership with the gym in Layerthorpe re-branded as the United Multi Masters Academy.

And as part of the UMMA launch the duo are promotiong their first Ring Series of kickboxing, Thai boxing and K1 contests at Energise on Cornlands Road in Acomb on Saturday.

Fought in a conventional boxing ring rather than the hexagonal or octagonal arenas of their Cage Confrontation promotions, Saturday’s event will run almost the entire day with a junior programme from 1pm to 4pm followed by the seniors from 5pm, including a WRSA full-contact British kickboxing title fight between Chloe Taylor and Lucy Horrobin.

Watkinson, whose first UMMA outing yielded three gold, two silver and seven bronze medals at a WAKO championships, said: “Tony and I wanted to put on something different.”

Dias has just won the ISKA British kickboxing title.
