MARTIAL arts fans lapped up an increase in intensity in the fourth Cage Confrontation phenomenon.
The city witnessed its first fully professional fight, where anything goes in the art of combat, while the 13-bout bill also included a brace of semi-professional contests fought for the first time in York under Nevada State Athletic Commission rules, which allow an opponent to be hit to the head while on the canvas, though the use of elbows is forbidden unlike in the pro ranks.
A crowd of close on 500 filled York’s Energise centre in Cornlands Road, Acomb, and revelled in the new departures in an event which further enhanced the status of York as a burgeoning mixed martial arts centre.
Both promoters – Gaz Watkinson and Tony Dias of joint venture United Masters Promotions – were delighted about the positive response to their upping the ante in the fourth of their Cage Confrontation series.
“Again it’s gone as well as expected and the good thing was that the level of competition has once more increased,” said Dias.
To the further joy of the joint promoters and home fans there were several successes for York fighters from the United Martial Arts College in Norton, York’s Multi Masters Academy, Legions, another York club, and Selby MMA.
