YORK Thai boxing prospect Joel Buckle ruled supreme across the Pennines in a rousing Roses duel.

The 18-year-old member of the Way Of Life Thai boxing camp in York, was crowned the North-West Area champion after an all-action spat against Andy Metcalfe, from Bolton.

Buckle battled his way to his first regional title deep in Metcalfe’s Lancashire heartland, where he stopped his opponent with knees to the body in the fourth round of the five two-minute round contest.

The judges deemed Metcalfe was unable to carry on, confirming the title capture for Buckle, who has been in the gruelling sport for just over a year.

It was also his fourth win in four contests and his trainer Andy Wilby, who runs the Way Of Life camp, insisted that his protégé’s next title contest would be for a national crown.

The Way Of Life club is to run new classes each Monday, Wednesday and Friday night, plus one on a Saturday morning, at the soon-to-be-opened Multi Masters Academy at Layerthorpe.

For details, phone Wilby on 07816 145673.
