York has a new Tae Kwon Do World Champion.

Oliver Richardson, from Leavening won the boys’ lightweight yellow belt category at the tenth Tae Kwon Do Association of Great Britain (TAGB) World Championships in Coventry.

After successfully winning through his rounds and semi-final, seeing off strong opponents, he fought courageously to record a victory over his opponent in the final.

Richardson, aged 11, who is also a black belt in kick boxing, trains at the East York Tae Kwon Do club in Stamford Bridge. He only took up the sport this year.

The club has been going for two and a half years and was well represented in all age groups, from seven-years-old to 44.

The club also had a silver medal success for Maxwell Griffin from Dunnington in the boys’ lightweight tag team as well as a bronze in the ‘Pee Wee’ girls’ tag team for Ashleigh Lightfoot from Stamford Bridge. She is also the reigning British champion in the Pee Wee division.

Gavin Cook, the club’s trainer said: “The whole team competed bravely against some very tough opponents but Oliver put in an exceptional performance to win gold.”
