YORK’S Kenshinkan Karate Club netted an impressive haul of medals at the Japan Karate Association (JKA) National Championships in Crawley.

The Canon Lee School-based club won five individual medals and dominated two categories at the meeting.

Sam Hudson secured third place after being beaten by club-mate Alistair Bevan, who went on to finish second in the 13 to 15-year-olds’ brown and black belt kumite. Bevan also came second in the 13 to 15-year-olds’ individual kata.

Jerome Barlow defeated club-mate Aron Blair in the final of the 16 to 18-year-olds’ brown and black belt kumite competition to give the club a one-two finish.

Barlow completed his hat-trick having won gold for the last three years in his respective category.

Ian Tate, the Kenshinkan chief instructor, said: “It is a pleasure turning up each week to teach this club.

“They give me their all when training and now they are reaping the rewards for their efforts.”

The Kenshinkan train at Canon Lee School in Rawcliffe every Tuesday and Thursday, from 7pm.
