YORK Cricket Club's weekend of woe deepened when they were well beaten by Elsecar in the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy.

Hard on the heels after they lost their Yorkshire League crown, there was no way back for skipper Daniel Woods’ side once they found themselves 34-5 against the South Yorkshire League side.

Despite a fine rearguard innings of 54 from Liam McKendry they eventually lost by eight wickets.

A large expectant crowd at Hanging Heaton CCC stared in disbelief as York, put into bat on a pitch offering considerable assistance to the bowling side, slumped.

Ian Jarvis was first to fall dragging a ball from Andrew Ivill onto his stumps and when Simon Lambert lobbed a simple catch to mid-off York were 25-2 from nine overs.

Iftikhar Afzal, having picked up the wicket of Lambert, struck twice in eight balls to send back Ryan McKendry and Nick Kay both caught at the wicket by Andrew Joburns, Richard Love fell to an excellent, low one-handed catch by Rana close in in Ivill’s penultimate over, the seamer finishing with 2-23 from his ten.

Respite was provided when Charlie Elliot joined Liam McKendry. They steadied things with a partnership of 55 off 15 overs for the sixth wicket. Elliot played well for his 18 and was particularly harsh on spinner Luke Townsend.

But the arrival of Jason Meadows broke the partnership. Elliot drilled a ball to extra cover where Ian Swallow took a good low catch.

McKendry reached his 50 off 106 balls, the usually aggressive stroke maker managing only four boundaries.

Tom Pringle made 18 and saw the score to a measure of respectability at 130 before being caught at mid-off, the first of four wickets for, man of the match, Glen Yates, who accounted for McKendry having reached 54 and the total 137.

The dismissal was the first of a hat-trick for the seamer as both Woods and Chris Burn fell to consecutive deliveries to end the innings.

Richard Pineo picked up the wicket of Meadows off the final ball of an extraordinary first over which included seven wides as he struggled to control with excessive movement off the wicket. It was a lone success for the York attack.

Although both Pringle and Woods found the edge of the bat several times, chances were either spilled or dropped just out of reach of the close catchers.

Ainsley Swallow reached his half-century off 48 balls with eight fours and two sixes and by the time he was run out, Woods providing the throw from point, the total was 118.

Yates hit two boundaries to finish on 12, while at the other end Brett Hunsley finished with 25. Extras totalling 32 capped a dismal day for the Clifton Parkers.
