STEVE Vine has became the latest player to book his place at next month's 2014 York Darts Promotions Pro-am Grand Finals at Huntington WMC.

The York-based player won the sixth qualifying event at Drax Sports and Social Club, where a record field of 37 did battle for the right to partner one of eight past-and-present darts stars.

After beating Bridlington's Andy Wheeler 2-1, Vine will now be paired with either Peter Manley, Bob Anderson, Tony O'Shea, Alan Warriner-Little, James Wilson, Gary Robson, Martin Atkins or Glen Durrant at the Wednesday, October 8 event.

Vine also beat Stuart Limbert, of Thorpe Willoughby, 2-1 in the semi finals at Drax, while Wheeler produced a 130 finish for 18 to end Arthur Sweeting's run to the last four, inflicting a 2-0 defeat on him.

Wheeler had earlier checked out on 115, whilst other notable performances saw Vine overcome Kirsty Parram with 21 and 180 for 19 darts, Limbert include 18, then two140s and a 120 finish for 15 and Kevin Richmond throw a 15-dart leg.

In addition, Trevor Day recorded a 177 score, Stephen Greenwood a treble-18 162 and Parram a 140.

The fifth qualifying event, meanwhile, was won by Driffield's Andy "Tugboat" Harland.

He beat Bridlington's Brandon Smith 2-1 with 21 and 18 darts in the final, having overcome last-four opponent Joshua Crew, of Cawood, by the same margin.

Smith saw off Drax beaten finalist Wheeler 2-0.

The quarter-final results were: Craw 2, Andrew Hanks 0; Harland 2 (17-18), Gary Rowan 0; Wheeler 2 (18) Stephen McDonald 0; Smith 2, Mark Hessletine 1.

In the earlier rounds, Wheeler included three 180s and checked out in18 and 17 darts.

Dean Spendlow won in 17 and 18 darts, including a maximum and Gary Rowan hit a 100 finish, with Craw going out on 157 for 21.

The blind pairs were won by Day and Kalum Waites, defeating Dave Withey/Richard Andrew 2-1.

Austin Brown/Brandon Smith and Andrew Hanks/Ken Brown were the losing semi-finalists.

Any amateur player, who is not participating on the PDC or BDO circuit, can now try and join Grand Finals qualifiers Vine, Harland, Wayne Woodhouse (Ferrybridge), Nick Harteveld (York), Mark McLoughlin (York) and Ian Andrew (Barton-upon-Humber) during the remaining two qualifying events.

They will take place at Easingwold's York Pub on Wednesday night and Clarence WMC on Thursday, October 2.
