POCKLINGTON Rocket Harry Matthews has set his sights on the British Masters title.

That is the prize up for grabs when the 24-year-old York-based boxer takes on Jason Ball at the Doncaster Dome on Saturday, September 1.

Matthews believes his determination can see him crowned a champion over ten three-minute rounds on the Andrew Bulcroft-promoted show.

Matthews’ last fight against the highly-rated Chris Eubank junior in May ended in the sixth defeat of his 19-fight professional career.

The 28-year-old Ball, nicknamed Daddy Cool, has won five, lost eight and drawn one of his 14 pro fights. Three bouts ago he was out-pointed by Eubank junior over six rounds at the Magna Centre in Rotherham.

While Matthews also lost on points to Eubank in a televised fight, he feels he deserved more from the contest. “In my eyes, I thought it could have been a draw,” he said. “I’ve had some bad luck with decisions, but I have learned from it. It’s not stopped me.

“I am a better fighter now than I have ever been. I only really take positives from the Eubank fight.

“Everybody thought I was going to get in there and get stopped, but I gave as good as I got.”

On his next opponent, Ball, he added: “He’s got a half and half record. He goes out to fight – he keeps walking forward all the time.

“He is strong, but I am determined to become a champion. That is what it is all about. My losses have geed me up to get a title won. I want to get back on the winning trail.”

New Earswick veteran Graham Fearn is also listed to appear on the card, taking on unbeaten lightweight Robbie Barrett over four three-minute rounds.

The 37-year-old returned to the ring to fight twice in eight days last month, losing on points over six rounds to Jamie Sampson in Sheffield and then over four rounds to Jake Smith in Liverpool. This will be his 20th pro bout.

Top of the bill is the Central Area light-heavyweight title clash between Carl Wild and John Anthony.

Matthews said: “It is going to be a packed out show and hopefully everybody from York can come and support me. This is my biggest fight to date.”

Tickets for the show, priced at £35 standard or £60 ringside, are available by phoning Matthews on 07854 543133.
