YORK Boxing Club’s hottest teenage prospect Thomas Macdonald has been pitched into the most daunting national quarter-final.

The 15-year-old will tomorrow take on two-time national schoolboy champion and England international Louis Dobson.

Merseysider Dobson is vastly more experienced – he has lost only three of his 38 bouts, with two of those reverses suffered while representing England.

He is from the illustrious Red Triangle Club in the Everton district of Liverpool in the bid to reach the semi-finals. Five of his club-mates are also competing in the 12-bout card in the 15-year-old class at Wakefield’s Havercroft and Ryhill Youth Centre.

But Macdonald, who has gone up in weight to featherweight in his first year as a junior, is also in stirring form. He has not been beaten since losing in the national schoolboy semi-finals a year ago.

Said York BC head coach Billy Wilson: “Thomas could not have been given a harder task after the quarter-finals draw was made. He’s fighting a class act, so he will have to pull off a career best to win.

“But Thomas has been training hard, sparring with some of the club’s senior boxers, and is in really good form.”
