YORK’S current professional boxing trainer Glenn Banks disclosed how just last month Bill Brown was in the corner of two of the fighters in Banks’ stable.

And that was the measure of the man, added the 34-year-old coach.

Said Banks: “Because I have a pro licence and the lads have only an European Boxing Federation certificate I am not allowed to be in their corner.

“So Bill offered to come in and look after the lads. That’s how he was – he was always helping me and giving me valuable advice.”

Banks had known Brown for the last 15 years during which they built up a solid friendship.

“He knew so much about boxing and he always wanted you to do well whether it was as a fighter or as a trainer,” said Banks.

“He was the Mr Boxing of York. He was like a father figure not just to me but to loads of lads in York.

“Bill is going to be very sorely missed.”
