Boom time for York Boxing Club in memory of Jack Raines

A BOOMING success – that was the first York Boxing Club show of the new season, writes Tony Kelly.

The show at the Tramways club attracted a crowd of more than 300, who revelled in a series of emphatic wins for the York and Selby-based fighters in action.

Out of the 11 bouts, the host club had eight wins, topped by boxer of the night Dean Moss.

Back in the ring for the first time in more than ten months after being hampered by a troubling nose injury sustained in sparring, Jones was impressive in toppling his opponent Liam Hays.

His assured performance earned him the Jack Raines memorial belt awarded in memory of former York Amateur Boxing Club trainer Jack Raines, who died earlier this year. Besides the awarding of the belt, the show featured a ten bells’ salute to Raines and an impeccably observed minute’s silence.

Other YBC winners were Chris Hall, Harry Senior, who was making his debut at the age of 11, Sonny Dalton, Tom McDonald, Selby’s Max Millward, another debutant in Joel Buckle and Robbie McHale, who stopped his opponent in the opening round.

The three defeats – all on slim majority decisions – were suffered by Sam Kidd, Joe Hines and Jobi Tyres, whose all-action encounter with Sefton ABC’s Colin Baker earned the bout of the night prize.

Said a delighted YBC head trainer Billy Wilson: “It was a cracking show. The only losses we had were on split decisions, so it’s looking good for the future of amateur boxing in the city.”
