BATTLING Paul Gordon will parade the York Boxing Club flag in the National Amateur Boxing Association quarter-finals this weekend.
The YBC ace came through the last 16 round in Scunthorpe, where he outscored an opponent from Birmingham.
Middleweight Gordon, who in his previous bout claimed the Yorkshire crown, was at his best throughout the contest to win a unanimous points decision by a comfortable 15-12 margin.
Said YBC head coach Billy Wilson: “It was a tough fight. The kid Paul fought was a good fighter.
“But Paul is boxing with great confidence and he seems to be really suited to the format of four two-minute rounds.”
Gordon will now contest a place in the all-England semi-finals when he meets the North-west champion from the Everton Red Triangle club in Liverpool at RAF Sleaford in Lincolnshire tomorrow night.
York BC’s Brady Coombes, the newlycrowned Yorkshire flyweight champion who was fighting in the senior division for the first time this year, lost his bout at the national last 16 stage.
Unfortunately for the 17-year-old Coombes, he was overweight at the weigh-in and had to spend time before the fight having to do some strenuous sweat-work in the sauna.
Then, up against an opponent almost three years older, Coombes found himself out-powered and he lost 11-5 on points.
“It was a brave show from Brady considering how he had to try to shed some weight. But with this being his first year in the seniors he can come back again next year,” added Wilson.
