TWO of York’s boxers will be striving for elevation to the uppercut class after pounding their way to be the cream of the county.

York Boxing Club’s Paul Gordon and Brady Coombes were each crowned Yorkshire champions in the National Amateur Boxing Association county finals held in Doncaster.

Now the duo are through to this Sunday’s regional finals – the national last 16 of their respective weight divisions – which will be staged in Scunthorpe.

Gordon was crowned the middleweight king of Yorkshire when he swept to a 24-16 points conquest of Cleckheaton-based foe Ben Hargreaves.

Designated a class ‘B’ fight, it was fought over four two-minute rounds with Gordon’s guile and power too much for his rival.

Teenager Coombes, fighting in the senior division for the first time, swept to a worthy 10-8 verdict over Sheffield’s Tony Frank to seize the flyweight title.

The only downside of the night at the Mexborough Ballroom was a points decision, which went against York BC’s Thomas Mulvenna, last year’s cruiserweight Yorkshire champion.

He was ahead 5-4 and 12-10 after the first two rounds of his bout, but bizarrely finished 18-14 down by the end of the three-round showdown against undefeated opponent Ryan Lambert of Bradford.

But for the club the double Yorkshire success of Gordon and Coombes was a huge fillip.

Head trainer Billy Wilson said that the brace of successes at Doncaster represented the club’s capture of no fewer than five titles in the calendar year.

“It’s a massive boost for everyone at the club,” said Wilson.

“To have got five champions in the one year is a great achievement and there could be more still to come.

“Paul and Brady will be up against good lads at Scunthorpe because they are all champions now with this being the last round before the national quarter-finals, but they are going in there on the back of good victories themselves.”
